How we cut your parts

We match every part to the right cutting method based on your material and geometry. Here’s how we sort it.

LAser

Default for metals

Fastest, most precise option for steel, aluminum, stainless, and titanium, plus acrylic and thin gaskets.
Waterjet

For heat-sensitive materials

Cutting with no heat-affected zone, so carbon fiber, phenolic, and rubber keep their properties.
CNC Routing

For plastics, composites, and wood

Cleaner and faster than laser on softer materials, with small tabs that sand off.
  Laser Waterjet CNC Routing
Best for Laser is the fastest, most precise option for metal up to .750″, thin gaskets and acrylic Waterjet cuts cold with no heat-affected zone. Perfect for composites, rubber, and foam CNC routing cuts plastics, composites, and wood cleaner and faster than laser
# of Material options 120 25 32
Thicknesses .015″ to .750″ .040″ to 2.25″ .118″ to .500″

What to expect on your cut sheet parts

Minimum hole and cutout:
50% material thickness
Materials over .187″ thick will show small striations and an abrasive edge.
Add deburring for a cleaner finish.
Lasers can't cut extremely fine geometry in thick material.
See Guidelines for material specific guidelines.
Internal radius (kerf accounted for):
.032″ (.813mm)
Light sandblast texture along cut edges is normal and part of the abrasive process.
All waterjet parts have small fixturing tabs left on the edges.
Foam and rubber may retain minor surface moisture after processing, parts are dried before shipping.
Minimum hole / inside diameter:
.125″ (.32 mm)
Cuts are 2D perpendicular only. No V-grooves, 3D contours, or partial-depth cuts.
Edges may show small witness marks, steps, or light burning.
Small .1875″-wide fixturing tabs remain on edges, sand to remove.

Sheet Cutting FAQs

Our system selects the cutting method automatically based on your material and design. Most metal parts are laser cut. Plastics, composites, and wood are usually CNC routed. Carbon fiber, G10, phenolic, foams, and most rubbers are waterjet cut. You’ll see the assigned method in your quote.

We accept 2D vector files (.dxf preferred, .dwg, .ai, .eps) and 3D files (.step, .stp). We can’t process STL or raster files (JPEG, PNG, BMP). If you only have raster art, see our conversion tutorials for Illustrator and Inkscape.

  • Laser: ±0.005″ on parts under 12″, ±0.010″ on parts over 12″
  • Waterjet: ±0.009″ in composite materials
  • CNC routing: ±0.005″ in composites, plastics, and wood Per-material tolerance data sheets are available on individual material pages.
  • Laser and CNC routing: 1–3 business days
  • Waterjet: 2–4 business days Add 1–10 days depending on finishing services. See our lead time chart for finishing impact.
